Think First Program

THINK FIRST, a National Brain & Spinal Cord Injury Prevention Program, developed by America’s neurosurgeons, is presented at no charge in junior and senior high schools. (Click here for complete information)

This upbeat program is presented to educate young people about personal vulnerability and risk-taking. The message is that you can have a fun and exciting life -- and you can do it without hurting yourself -- if you "THINK FIRST" and use your mind to protect your body.

THINK FIRST for KIDS is offered in the elementary school in a classroom format fully integrated into the curriculum. Each grade (1-3) has a separate curriculum and an array of classroom activities designed specifically for its grade level. The activities are designed to be integrated into various subjects, such as mathematics and science.

The complete program designed to educate the students about activities which place them at risk of a brain or spinal cord injury consists of a 12-minute animated video; five individual safety modules; five posters and five comic strips depicting "Street Smart," an animated character who practices safe behavior, in related scenarios. Each module addresses an individual safety area including vehicular safety, water safety, bicycle safety, violence, and sports and recreational safety.

Dr. Michael Turner is a board member of the National Think First Foundation.
