Essential
Tremor and Parkinson's Disease
These movement disorders are not well understood
even thought they are relatively common - involving perhaps 1% of the
American population. A tremor disorder is an involuntary, rhythmic movement
of muscle groups, most evident in the extremities, that may range in severity
from barely noticable to totally disabling.
In
severe cases, there is growing scientific support that electrical impulses
to the brain may reduce the severity of tremor by competing with the brain's
own impulses. These devices that are very similar to cardiac pacemakers
and are implanted during a surgical procedure.
