Pituitary Disorders
The pituitary is probably best understood as "command central" for most of the human body's major hormones. Approximately the size of a large pea, the endocrine gland tissue is attached to a tiny stalk, the hypothalamus, extending directly down from the brain stem - almost in the center of your head from any direction. Although malignancies are not common in this area, small growths, usually benign, in this gland can cause overproduction of certain hormones and underproduction of other key hormones.

Evaluation and removal of these very small "adenomas" is almost a subspecialty all of its own.
