Neurosurgery: Facial Pain & Trigeminal Neuralgia
There may be many causes of facial pain ranging from dental conditions to nerve conditions, such as trigeminal neuralgia ("tic doloreux"), an abnormality involving a branch of the 5th cranial nerve. The Trigeminal Nerve has three major divisions (from which its name is derived) and provides sensory innervation to the face from the hairline to below the chin and motor function such as chewing (eg the masseter muscles).

Trigeminal neuralgia, a condition of unknown cause, can give rise to abrupt, severe, shooting and burning pain in the facial area. resulting in quite unpleasant experiences for the sufferer. Sometimes, the destruction of the nerve bodies of this nerve is the only source of relief.
